The school year is in full swing and it is time for our first project. 1st grade will be studying the country of Kenya this year. Our first project is to complete a map of Kenya. Directions and posters should have been sent home by every teacher by last Friday(August 17). If you need any materials please let us know. Kenya Project - First Nine Weeks First Grade- Katz, Johnson, and Shannon MAP OF KENYA DUE DATE: September 10th Our International Studies have begun! This year your child will be learning about Kenya! There will be many fun learning opportunities to accompany our country of study. The student is to create a map of Kenya highlighting the country’s geographic features and areas inside the country and surrounding Kenya. The map should include all of these requirements: 1. Major Rivers/Lakes: Tana River, Lake Victoria, Lake Turkana 2. Landform(s): Mt. Kenya and Taita Hills 3. Major Cities: Nairobi (the capital), Mombasa, Kisumu, any other cities 4. Neighboring Countries: Sudan, Somalia, Uganda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia 5. Indian Ocean 6. Map Key with at least 3 symbols 7. Cardinal Directions 8. At least one 3-D area on the map (See information below for ideas) 9. Write or type a paragraph telling about the map’s information. **WE WILL SEND HOME THE ½ sheet of POSTER BOARD for this project. The student will be expected to present the map and orally share with the class. The map will be graded as follows: (Review the attached rubric) * Are all requirements present and labeled? Was there a map key, symbols, and cardinal directions? Did you include all 9 requirements in your map? * Did the student do a good job sharing his/her project with the class? * Was the map neat? Was the map creative? * Was there at least one 3-D area on the map? * Was the map turned in on time? * Did the student prepare a short written or typed paragraph about the map’s information? Was the paragraph neat, free of grammar errors, and free of spelling errors? Please send in the written report with the map. This will be helpful when the student has to share the map with the class. Some suggested materials for 3-D effects could be: * Glitter * Sand * Grass * Foam * Construction Paper * Rocks * Playdough * Flour Dye * Material you come up with – be creative! Hey Parents! Anytime you need a tip sheet it will be on your dashboard!
